What is Total Prosthesis?

Total prostheses are used in case the patient loses the teeth in the lower or upper jaw so that they can fill their place and smile in confidence. This type of prosthesis is produced from plastic (acrylic) or metal. In cases where the lower and upper jaws are completely edentulous, the prosthesis called the total dentures is used, and in cases where some teeth are missing, the prosthesis called the partial dentures is used. How Is Total Prosthesis Made?

Total prosthesis treatment varies according to the treatment plan of the patient. While 3-4 sessions, approximately 3 weeks, are required for the construction of total prostheses, this period is much longer for partial prostheses.

What are the Advantages of Total Prostheses?

Total prostheses made to restore both the functional and aesthetic properties of lost tissues and teeth are satisfactory in this regard. It also helps to protect existing teeth and tissues that are healthy in the mouth. Dental prostheses are very useful in terms of performing the oral and chewing application, which is the first stage of our nutrition and digestion, in the best way. What are the Disadvantages of Total Prostheses?

Total prostheses are not as aesthetic as fixed prostheses. Over time, it can form calluses on the gums. It can also cause allergic reactions, although rare. They can come out of the mouth in undesirable situations due to the fact that they are not fixed. Denture adhesives may be required to prevent such situations.

What Should Be Done After Total Prosthesis?

It is important for prolonging the life of the prosthesis that the prosthesis is properly maintained and the dentist controls are not neglected. Care should be taken not to damage the prosthesis during insertion or removal. It is useful to clean it every day, as food residues will disturb when it gets between the prosthesis. It should be considered that it is fragile.
